The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
