Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these medications should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
