Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
